"Ναι στους λαούς, όχι στο ΝΑΤΟ"

Χιλιάδες Αμερικάνοι, μέλη των αντιπολεμικών και των occupy κινημάτων, διαδήλωσαν το Σαββατοκύριακο στο Σικάγο ενάντια στο ΝΑΤΟ, κατά τη διάρκεια της συνόδου κορυφής της Βορειοατλαντικής Συμμαχίας.


Άνθρωποι όλων των ηλικιών από όλη τη χώρα, κατέκλυσαν τους δρόμους του Σικάγο, διαμαρτυρόμενοι για τις πολεμικές συγκρούσεις που έχει προκαλέσει και συνεχίζει να προκαλεί το ΝΑΤΟ σε ολόκληρο τον κόσμο. Με την ατζέντα όμως των κινητοποιήσεων να συνδέεται ξεκάθαρα πλέον με τα αιτήματα του κινήματος του 99%, που εκτός από την ειρήνη περιλαμβάνει και τη κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη, το δικαίωμα στην παιδεία, την υγεία αλλά και την εργασία. "Ξοδεύουν λεφτά για πολέμους αντί για τα σχολεία, με αποτέλεσμα να μην μπορούμε να πάμε στο κολλέγιο επειδή είναι πολύ ακριβά", σχολίασε η Ισαμπέλ Ολίβια, μαθήτρια λυκείου. "Από το δικό μας occupy κίνημα, το μαζικό ξεσηκωμό που αντικατοπτρίζεται στις εκλογές στην Ελλάδα και τη Γαλλία, ένας άνεμος αλλαγής φυσάει σε όλο τον κόσμο, με τους ανθρώπους να λένε φτάνει πια ο πόλεμος, η πείνα, η φτώχεια και η βία και να ψάχνουν κάτι καινούργιο", τόνισε φοιτήτρια που συμμετείχε στις διαδηλώσεις.

Η πόλη είχε μετατραπεί σε φρούριο ημέρες πριν τις κινητοποιήσεις. Την προηγούμενη Τετάρτη μάλιστα η αστυνομία του Σικάγο, μετά από έφοδο σε διαμέρισμα, συνέλαβε τρεις διαδηλωτές, από άλλες πολιτείες, ως ύποπτους για τρομοκρατία. Συλλήψεις οι οποίες προκάλεσαν θύελλα διαμαρτυριών καθώς οι συλληφθέντες, δύο εκ των οποίων ζούσαν σε κοινόβιο στο Μαϊάμι με το όνομα "οχυρό της ειρήνης", δεν έχουν σύμφωνα με τους συναγωνιστές τους σχέση με τα πιο βίαια κομμάτια του κινήματος. Το μόνο που βρέθηκε στο διαμέρισμα, όπως δήλωσαν οι δικηγόροι τους, ήταν εξοπλισμός για παρασκευή σπιτικής μπύρας, γεγονός που ξεσήκωσε ακόμη περισσότερες ανησυχίες για τη δράση της αστυνομίας και του FBI.

Ανησυχίες που επιβεβαιώθηκαν σε μεγάλο βαθμό κατά τη διάρκεια των κινητοποιήσεων, αφού οι πορείες γνώρισαν την έντονη καταστολή της αστυνομίας με δεκάδες συλλήψεις και τραυματισμούς πολιτών. "Έτσι μοιάζει η δημοκρατία", φώναξαν οι διαδηλωτές σε σχέση με την αστυνομοκρατούμενη πόλη και τη βία που εξαπολύθηκε εναντίον τους.Police chased the demonstrators away from the venue, after which they held a peaceful march in central business district of the city.

Παράλληλα, αίσθηση προκάλεσαν οι τουλάχιστον πενήντα βετεράνοι από τους πολέμους στο Ιράκ και το Αφγανιστάν, οι οποίοι σε ένδειξη διαμαρτυρίας για τους πολέμους που ξεκίνησε η χώρα τους, πέταξαν τα παράσημά τους, ενέργεια που είχε να συμβεί, σε μεγάλη κλίμακα, από την εποχή του πολέμου στο Βιετνάμ και τις τότε αντιπολεμικές διαμαρτυρίες. "Έχω καταλήξει ότι δεν υπάρχει πόλεμος ενάντια στην τρομοκρατία, μόνο πόλεμος ενάντια στο λαό του Αφγανιστάν, ο οποίος αντιδρώντας προσχωρεί στους Ταλιμπάν. Αυτό που κάνουμε δεν έχει κανένα νόημα", δήλωσε βετεράνος στρατιώτης εξηγώντας την πράξη του. "Οι στρατιώτες αντιλαμβάνονται ότι τα μετάλλια αυτά τους δόθηκαν για να επιφέρουν πόνο και αδικίες εις βάρος άοπλων πολιτών", εξήγησε βετεράνος του πολέμου στο Βιετνάμ που παρευρέθηκε στις διαμαρτυρίες.
