A scene from the 1st Gay Parade festival of Thessaloniki (Greece) last Saturday. The ultra-conservative Orthodox archbishop of the city had opposed the parade. The few dozens of people on the other side of the police cordon are his followers who gathered to make a counter-protest. The thugs fired eggs and shouted homophobic slogans against the paraders. No injuries were reported.
In recent days, Anthimos, the senior Greek Orthodox Archbishop of Thessaloniki (known for his outspoken speeches on social and political issues), had publicly criticized the festival, and many times delivered hate speeches against migrants, visible minorities, and homosexuals.
